New York Times Highlights Latin America Bargains

A few of our favorite destinations where mentioned: Argentina, Belize, Nicaragua, and Panama. The article noted what we’ve known for years — that many times travelers can find top of the line adventures at a fraction of the price that they would pay in the US or Europe. LAN airlines offering deal on domestic flights for Peru travels

Here’s a great deal for those headed on a Peru trip. LAN airlines is offering a free round trip domestic Peru flight when you purchase your international flights to Lima, Peru on LAN airlines. Deal applies to flights from Miami, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and several additional US connecting cities including: Boston, Chicago, Denver, Philadelphia, Seattle or Washington DC. The catch: You need to purchase your flights by March 15, 2011, and need to utilize them before June 15, 2011. I would say 95% of all Peru travelers take at least one domestic flight when in country, so if you are planning a trip to Peru before June 15, 2011 this is definitely a deal for you. The month of November (late Austral spring and early Austral summer) undoubtedly offers the most adventurous time to visit the Peninsula. This is the time to see Antarctica at its most undisturbed form. As the season goes on, the landing areas become impacted and muddy. Some operators tend to discourage November voyages as temperatures tend to be colder and polar ice is still breaking up so access to some areas may be limited. The cold temperatures, however, also offer the most impressive ice-scapes, pristine snow and breathtaking scenery.

Antarctica wildlife — particularly whales — is not as plentiful as later in the season. That said, I have personally been to Antarctica during November and we had five humpback sightings; one that graced our zodiac. Penguins numbers and plentiful, and this is a great time to see the penguins mating.

Everyone lately seems to be looking for ways to cut costs on the trip of a lifetime. For me, it can be difficult to give good advice on how to do this, as to slash costs usually translates into a reduction of service quality or hotel quality that normally greatly reduces the value of the trip as well. I would say there are some countries (such as Guatemala or Peru) where you definitely do not want to skimp on guide quality or services, hotel quality, or transportation quality, as the end result will likely leave you wishing you had not visited the country in the first place!

There is however one destination where I would say it can be done, and done with relative ease and little noticeable lack in experience at all, and that would be Costa Rica. The tourism industry in Costa Rica is so well developed that you can travel to almost any region in the country and find someone who speaks very good english and knows the names of flora and flauna in English well enough to tell you all about the local wildlife in the area as any top knotch travel guide would do. While you may find it inconvenient to have to adjust to the various personalities of guides that you will encounter on the way, you will find that your overall experience will still be the trip of a lifetime!
